So, I've been running, and it's hard. But I'm getting better. I think I'm going to sign up for a 5k race at the end of August, in Toronto. Anyone want to run with me??

I also just tried a workout DVD called the 30-Day Shred. It kicked my ass but good. But I think I'll keep it up. This summer I have a lot of free time, and I think it would be amazing if I could use it to start getting into shape! Then hopefully in the fall, I'll keep it up, and before long--superfit vestra, hooray!

The very best part about running--well, one of the only not horrible things about running--is creating the playlists I use to run to. I'm doing a walk/run program, so use my music to know when to switch from one to the other--I'll have a 4-minute song to warm up to, then a 5-minute one to run to, a 1-minute one to walk to, etc. I really enjoy picking out the music to use.

I feel like I have pretty eclectic mixes--most of the one-minute songs I have are from musicals, so there's a lot of varied stuff going on most days. Yesterday I ran to: Billy Joel, Lyle Lovett, Natalie Merchant, Elliott Brood, Broken Social Scene, The Ting Tings, and songs from Hair, Suessical, and Spamalot. Random!!

The coolest part lately has been that I'm running to a ton of new music. Just before I came here for the summer, my lovely friend Mary-Ann gave me a ton of music. She has interesting and eclectic taste, and I asked her to burn me a Decemberists disc, as they're a band I keep hearing about, but had never actually heard (I basically know next to nothing about any recent music-I listen to 90% showtunes.) Instead, she gave me not only that, but about 40 other discs of stuff she thought I might like! It's been amazing-I'm discovering stuff I really like!

Here's a sampling of the kind of stuff she gave me:

Bands/artists I'd heard of, and knew enough to think that I might like them, but hadn't ever actually heard: Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists, Joel Plaskett Emergency, The New Pornographers, Rilo Kiley, Stars.

Bands/artists I'd heard of, but knew basically nothing about: Broken Social Scene, The Flaming Lips, Great Lake Swimmers, The Killers, Ra Ra Riot, TV on the Radio, Vampire Weekend.

Bands/artists I'd never even heard of, because I am lame and uncool: Beirut, Elliott Brood, Metric, MGMT, The National, Noah and the Whale, Of Montreal, The Ting Tings, Tokyo Police Club, Wintersleep.

I've only listened to about half so far, but there's lots that I really like! Hooray!

In conclusion, running is hard, but listening to interesting new music makes it less horrible.
