I really like compiling my year-end lists, but I'm so far behind still! I gotta get going...

In the theatres in September I saw:

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, an excellent and compelling documentary. I do find it fascinating how so often funny people are totally damaged and sad inside. Definitely recommended.

Going The Distance is a rom-com with Drew Barrymore and Justin Long that I barely remember. I think I liked it ok! Man, I gotta write these posts quicker. Sigh.

I do remember that I liked Never Let Me Go quite a bit. I read the book a few years ago, and I think the movie did it justice. Great moody atmosphere, good performances, great overall creepiness. Good!

I continued my Bones-watching with Season 5. Fun stuff.

September is Fringe month in Vancouver, so my month was theatre-riffic!

TJ Dawe's latest, Lucky 9, was my total favourite. Is it a cliché to say that I laughed and I cried? 'Cause I did! So good.

Also quite good: Every Job I’ve Ever Had, Die Roten Punkte: Kunst Rock, 52 Pick-Up.

Decently fine: Raccoonery!, Dr. Horrible’s Singalong Blog (I was excited for the live-action version of this, and it was fun, but not as great as I was hoping...)

Not my cup of tea, although I'd always heard such great things about him: Jem Rolls: One Man Riot

I also saw Tear The Curtain!, a super-cool show at the Arts Club that blended theatre and film and was bezonkers. I'm not sure it added up to anything, but it was sure fun to watch.

The trailers for Going the Distance made me think I'd actually enjoy it (as opposed to making me want to rush the screen and sucker-punch its leading characters, like most rom-coms do) but then I got worried when I read something about how wussily and glibly it ended up solving the distance problem. Still, maybe a renter?

I saw a couple of Jem Rolls shows back in the day and although they were okay I certainly never got the hype. TJ, on the other hand... !!

I just read Linda H's post about being super annoyed by the ending of Going The Distance---CJP and I just talked about it, and we both were just fine with the ending. I mean, rom-coms have happy endings, that's kind of the point. It was a while ago, but I certainly don't remember finding the ending too glib and easy. I thought the story was interesting, and there were some great supporting performances (Christina Applegate was hilarious!). Three months on, the whole movie's pretty fuzzy to me, but I for sure think it's worth a rent! It's miles better than your average rom-com.

This was my first time at a Jem Rolls show, and I mostly just thought it was shouty and boring. Huh.

I saw Lucky 9 three times (once with ListersGirl, once with my sister and her partner, and once with SFD) and I laughed and cried each time.

Man, it was good, wasn't it? I always love his stuff, but this one was just so excellent--and way more emotional than his others, while still being hilarious. Well done.

I made my parents go, too. It was the jumping-off point for a lot of interesting conversations about types and so on.
